It was a windy Monday at the Westwood Golf Course in Newton when the DC-G girls’ golf teams competed at the regional tournament for a chance to qualify for the state tournament.
At the end of the day, DC-G, which was undefeated going into the event, finished fifth.
Despite wind gusts as high as 33 mph, DC-G coach John Klaessy said that "the course itself was more of a challenge than the windy weather conditions" and that it favored the winning team, Grinnell, and the runner up, Newton since Westwood is Newton’s home course and Grinnell has played a couple of meets there during the season.
Taryn Gholson, a state qualifier a year ago, led the way for DC-G shooting 91 followed by Michaela Fay with 93, Sam Zamzow with 109 and Sara Beeler who shot a 115. The team shot 408 overall for their fifth-place finish.
Gholson missed qualifying for state on an individual basis this season finishing just one stroke behind Grinnell’s Amber Kracht, who snagged the sixth spot in state tournament after shooting a 90 in Newton on Monday.
