In their second outing of the 2019 campaign, the Dallas Center-Grimes boys golf team captured a second place finish Thursday afternoon in a conference triangular at Willow Creek Golf Course.

DC-G matched up against conference foes Norwalk and Pella, and came away with a second place team finish with a collective team score of 169.

For the second straight outing, senior Derek Shanno led the way through the nine holes of play, carding a season best round of one-under-par 34. After striking a bogey on hole one, Shanno came back with a six par, two birdie performance to capture his best nine hole round of the season so far. The two birdies came courtesy of superb approach shots on holes four and seven, leading to what head coach Jordan Ray states as one of Shanno’s better qualities.

“Derek is a very skilled putter,” began Ray. “He does a great job of reading the greens and not trying to do too much. High school golfers tend to make everything in one put and over shoot or severely undershoot their puts out of fear. Derek has always been level headed and his putting skills have really improved because of it.”

As great as that mark was, it just missed out on first by two spots as Norwalk had two golfers strike rounds matching or bettering Shanno’s mark of one under par. In all Shanno was third individually across the entire meet. Fellow senior Keegan Bianchi shot one of his better rounds of the season with a seven-over-par round of 42. With a par and a birdie to his credit, Bianchi struck a top ten score for the meet. Carter Bowen was next up on the list for DC-G, shot just three strokes off his season best with a nine hole round of eleven-over-par 46.

The final three scores for the Mustangs included Brody Stiles with a twelve-over-par mark of 47 who was matched by Ethan Blum, also with a 47, and finally Alex Thomas with a nine hole mark of 53.

With a pair of top two finishes under their belts already, the Mustangs are ready to tackle their next adventure which brings them home for their only home meet of the 2019 season on Tuesday, April 9. Within the confines of Beaver Creek Golf Course, the Mustangs will welcome in another conference triangular complete with Grinnell and Newton. The meet will begin at 4:15 p.m.
