The Dallas Center-Grimes wrestling team took on their second contest of the 2019 year with a trip to the Bobcat Jerry Eckenrod Invitational on Saturday, January 5.

It was a tough field of 17 teams including the Mustangs of DC-G. Zach Needham, the seventh ranked 182 pound wrestler in Class 3A, highlighted the weekend as the only Mustang to reach a title match. This time however, Needham took on the 170 pound weight class where he entered the championship round and started off with a first round bye. He then took on Logan Schimanski of Assumption and earned a win by tech fall 17-1 at the 4:57 mark. That sent the returning letter winner to the first place match but it was a tough outing for the upperclassmen who fell to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont’s Sage Walker by a 10-2 major decision.

Other place winners included Trevon Wells at 126 pounds who overcame a round one loss to shell out three straight victories including an 11-1 major decision win and an 11-4 decision victory. That was capped off with a strong finish against Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Nathan Lauterwasser, winning by a strong 13-6 decision. Bain Broderick at 160 pounds also traveled that same path and overcame an opening round loss. After a bye in the consolation first round, Broderick tracked his way to a seventh place finish with two straight wins by fall (35 seconds and and 52 seconds) before defeating Kaleb Roach of Union High School with a 9-3 decision win.

Blake Willey at 220 pounds also delivered a seventh place performance for the day. After suffering a pin-fall loss to start the championship round, Willey made his way to the consolation third round and bested Nolan Stetter of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont by fall at the 1:18 mark before officially capturing his seventh place finish with a pin-fall win over Benton Community’s Crawford Zach (1:17).

The Mustangs will continue their season on Thursday, January 10 when they welcome in the likes of Oskaloosa to DC-G Meadows Gym. Activities will kick off at 6 p.m.
