With the 2018 portion of the schedule coming to a close, the Waukee boys’ swimming team captured a win at the Nisha Valley YMCA in Atlantic on Wednesday, December 19.
It was a multiple team meet as the Warriors battled Sioux City and Atlantic High School and through it all, Waukee took the win with 170 team points. Sioux City captured second with 162 points followed by Atlantic with 21 points.
In total, the Warriors took home eight first place finishes on the night for the varsity and five first place finishes for the junior varsity. On the varsity level, three of the first place finishes came from the relay events in which Waukee took the top spot in each. In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the foursome of Cameron Linder, Drew Reiter, Carter Mosley, and Augie Muenzenmay clocked in a collective time of 1:44.40 which placed first and missed out on their season best by less than a second. The 200 Yard Freestyle Relay event took home the first place prize as the team of Muenzenmay, Campbell Patterson, Davis Kuhlers, and Mitchell Pollitt collected a time of 1:30.97. A similar first place outcome came in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay after the group of Muenzenmay, Pollitt, Reiter, and Linder clocked in a time of 3:23.89. That group bested the field in nearly every phase with top times in three of the four legs of the race.
Along with taking part in first place finishing relay events, Mitchell Pollitt took home an individual first and second place finish for the meet. The senior’s first place finish came in the 200 yard freestyle where he jumped out to a fast start of 24.34 seconds en rout to a first place time of 1:51.71. The second place individual finish for Pollitt came in the 100 Yard Butterfly event where he captured a season best time of 57.57 seconds.
The individual who took first in the 100 Yard Fly event was Carter Moseley who also had a strong night. The senior’s first place time in the 100 Yard Butterfly event was 57.33 seconds. Moseley also took second in the 200 Yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:10.45.
Continuing along with the first place finishes, Andrew Reiter took home the top spot in that same 200 Yard IM event with a time of 2:06.83. Reiter also delivered a second place finish in the individual 100 Yard Freestyle event thanks to a time of 51.12 seconds. Other first place finishes included Davis Kuhlers in the 500 Yard Freestyle who defeated the six swimmer field with a time of 5:21.10 which included the fastest first and final legs of the race. Cameron Linder secured a first place finish in the 100 Yard Backstroke event with an opening leg time of 27.08 seconds and a finishing leg time of 28.35 for a grand total of 55.43 seconds, a full five seconds ahead of the second place swimmer. That marked a team season best for the Warriors, out-doing the time of Davis Kuhlers of 56.78 seconds.
The Warriors now have a 6-0 dual meet record with the win and will be looking for more come the 2019 portion of the schedule when they travel to Southeast Polk High School on Thursday, January 3. The meet will include both JV and Varsity events and will begin at 5:30 p.m.
