It wasn’t exactly the outcome the Dallas Center-Grimes faithful were hoping for as Mustang football dropped their season opener to Class 3A runner up Pella Friday night.

The potent offense that averaged 30 points per game last season was silenced as the Dutch of Pella shut down the Mustangs 28-0. The Mustangs managed just 175 yards of total offense, averaging 3.4 yards per play.

The Dutch first scored with five minutes left in the first quarter to earn the early 7-0 lead. The bulk of the scoring for the Dutch came in the second quarter where they pounded out two scores for a 21-0 halftime lead. The last of the scoring for the game came on a Pella touchdown with under a minute left in the third quarter.

The season opening loss marks the first season opening loss for the Mustangs in the last six seasons.

Garrett Morris was given a tough task as quarterback tacking on the Pella defense but fared pretty well going 6-for-19 for 70 yards and an interception. On the ground, junior Luke Fistler paced the Mustangs with 82 yards on 21 carries, meanwhile Morris chipped in 35 rushing yards on 11 attempts. It was slim pickings for the receiving core with Isaac Boley leading in receptions with two for 13 yards while Rudy Stallman held the most yards receiving with 33.

Defensively senior Rowan Collins led the way in tackles with 9.5 followed by Bain Broderick with 8.5 and Trenton Liebe with 7.5 tackles. Liebe was also stingy through the air with one interception returned for nine yards.

The Mustangs unfortunately start the season 0-1 but will aim to grab their first win Friday, August 31 with another home match up against Norwalk. Dallas Center-Grimes will be looking to break a loosing trend against the Warriors as the Mustangs have faltered in each of the last three appearances against Norwalk. Game time will begin from DC-G stadium beginning at 7:30 p.m.
