The Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs started their wrestling season with their home invitational on Dec. 2. The Mustangs took sixth out of the 15 teams with a total of 115 points.

Zane Mulder led the Mustangs at the invitational. Mulder placed first in the 160 pound bracket, scoring 25.50 points for the Mustangs.

Mulder started off the meet with a bye in the championship match, but took on Jackson Kinsella (Creston/Orient Macksburg) in the quarterfinals. Mulder beat Kinsella in two minutes by fall.

In the semifinal match, Mulder won by technical fall (17-2) over Interstate 35’s Jacob Steinlage. Mulder was Steinlage’s only loss.

Mulder wrestled Wes Cummings from Prairie City-Monroe for first place. Mulder won the match in a 6-1 decision.

At 152 pounds, Luke Fistler was the second leader for the Mustangs. With a 4-1 record at the invite, Fistler placed third and earned 18 team points.

Fistler won his first round by a 11-2 major decision over Drew Johnson (Prairie City-Monroe). In the quarterfinal match, Fistler wrestled Nevada’s Luke Ferguson. Fistler had Ferguson pinned in 1.55.

Adel-DeSoto-Minburn’s Nolan Harsh was Fistler’s only loss. Harsh beat Fistler in an 8-0 major decision in the semifinals.

For third place, Fistler took on Harrison Hayes (Webster City). Fistler won the match by fall in 3:43.

Max Tracy also placed third for the Mustangs. Tracy (132) went 3-1 and scored 14 team points.

Tracy received a bye in the first championship round and immediately went on to wrestle in the quarterfinals. Tracy wrestled Chase Shirk from Prairie City-Monroe in the quarterfinal match. Tracy won the match in an 8-5 decision.

Cal Baethke (Urbandale) was able to pin Tracy in the semifinals, which put Tracy into the third place match. Tracy won the third place match over Kelby Luther (Creston/Orient Macksburg) with a 13-4 major decision.

Ayden Kovaleski (113) was the fourth leader for the Mustangs. Kovaleski scored 12 team points for the Mustangs when he placed fourth.

Kovaleski was placed into the quarterfinals after having a bye in the championship round. Kovaleski won the match over Greene County’s Garrett Tasler with a 14-1 major decision.

Kovaleski lost his last two matches of the day. Andrew Flora (A-D-M) beat Kovaleski in the semifinals in a 7-0 decision. He then placed fourth after losing the third place match to Peter Comer from Carlisle. Comer beat Kovaleski in a 14-6 major decision.

The Mustangs will be hosting another meet on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m.
