Dallas Center-Grimes girls’ track and field had an excellent showing at the state-qualifying meet in Winterset on Thursday, May 12. The Fillies scored 178 points on their way to first place.
The team’s performance led to DC-G girls qualifying for 13 events at the state meet, which will be held at Drake Stadium May 19-21.
Sophomore Ashley Murrow qualified in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.18 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, Abby Weddle finished second at 26.64 and earned a spot at state.
Ally Ferguson was the victor in the 400-meter dash. She finished with a mark of 1:03.97 and qualified for state.
The 1500-meter run was a particularly strong event for the Fillies. With times of 5:09.62 and 5:11.11, Addie Dannewitz and Lexi Smith took first and second place, respectively. Both runners will compete at state.
Smith also qualified in the 3000-meter run with a second-place finish and a time of 11:41.15.
In the 100-meter hurdles, senior Maci Masching finished second at 15.80. She will take the track at Drake on Friday.
The Fillies excelled in the relays, too. In the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay, Abby Ryan, Amber Workman, Carsyn Vance and Masching finished second with a time of 1:08.61.
DC-G took first in the 4x100-meter relay. Weddle, Masching, Ryan and Rachel Lowary combined for a time of 51.26.
The 4x200-meter relay went similarly in DC-G’s favor. The team of Weddle, Murrow, Tatum Jorgensen and Lowary finished first and qualified for state.
Jenna Borchers, Sami Sterbenz, Smith and Jorgensen ran the 4x400-meter relay for DC-G and finished second. The 4:14.54 time was good for another state qualifier.
In the 4x800-meter relay, the Fillies picked up another second-place finish. Dannewitz, Sterbenz, Brooke Kramer and Jorgensen combined for a time of 10:09.17 and qualified for state.
DC-G finished first in the 800-meter sprint medley relay with a mark of 1:51.26. Weddle, Masching, Lowary and Jorgensen represented the Fillies in the event.
The distance medley proved to be another opportunity for DC-G to qualify for state. Ryan, Lauren Ashley, Borchers and Sterbenz posted a time of 4:27.81 and took second.
The Fillies outperformed the competition at districts and now have their sights set on state, where the challenge will be greater.
