DES MOINES, Iowa - State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald has a list that may add money to your pocket. Treasurer Fitzgerald is releasing the top 10 unclaimed properties in Dallas county. "I encourage all Iowans to check their local newspaper for the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt list that will be published soon. Individuals can also check today online at," Fitzgerald stated.

The list of the top 10 unclaimed properties in Dallas County is being released in conjunction with the upcoming spring publication of the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. It includes the names of thousands of individuals whose unclaimed property has been received by my office in the last year. "The spring publication is just beginning," added Fitzgerald. "We hope to reunite many Iowans in Dallas with their lost treasure."

The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt program has returned over $209 million in unclaimed property to more than 489,000 people since Fitzgerald created it in 1983. Unclaimed property refers to money and other assets held by financial institutions or companies that have lost contact with the property’s owner for a specific period of time. State law requires these institutions and companies to annually report unclaimed property to the state treasurer’s office. The assets are then held until the owner or heir of the property is found. Common forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, utility security deposits and safe deposit box contents.
