Van Meter boys’ and girls’ golf were both in action Monday, May 9 at Lake Panorama National Golf Course. Both Bulldogs squads took second place against Earlham and Panorama.

At 174, the girls finished just one stroke behind the victorious Panorama team. Individually, the two top golfers came from VM.

Lizzy Lyon shot the best overall score, coming in at 35 in the nine-hole, par-3 contest. She parred the fourth and seventh holes. Lyon also took more than four strokes on only one hole.

Molly Carey ranked second individually. She came away with pars on the first and eighth holes and never went beyond five strokes on any hole. With a 37, Carey joined Lyon as the only two girls to break 40.

Erica Scieszinski shot a 49 for the second-place Bulldogs. Elsa Abrahamson recorded 53 strokes and parred the fourth hole. Becca Walter finished with a score of 54.

On the boys’ side, VM shot a combined 178. The Bulldogs finished well ahead of Earlham’s 190 but far behind Panorama’s 151.

Kyle Schmitt was the top golfer for the VM boys. With 38 strokes, he was one of four competitors to finish under 40. Schmitt parred the second, third, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth holes to finish an impressive two over par for the day.

Blake Fryar and Gavin Waller both posted a score of 46. Fryar ended up with pars on the first and second holes and a birdie on the par-3 seventh. Waller parred the third and fifth for the second-place VM squad.

Anthony Lowman took 48 strokes in Monday’s meet, which included a par on the ninth hole. Ryan Schmitt shot a 49 and parred the third hole. JJ Durflinger ended the day with 56 strokes and a par on hole four.
