In their conference opener, the Dallas Center-Grimes baseball team came to win and they did just that Wednesday night, defeating Newton at home by a 5-0 final.
The scoring for the Mustangs came in bunches and started with a three run bottom of the first. The Mustangs then added two more in the fifth inning which was more than enough to take the victory.
Dallas Center-Grimes embodied the word efficient as they drove in those five runs off of just four hits. Two of those hits came by way of the long ball with senior Brandon Risius crushing a pair of home runs to capture all five of DC-G’s runs batted in for the game. Fellow seniors Justin Biegger and Cade Bertrand recorded the other two hits for the Mustangs.
On the mound, sophomore Logan Smith performed masterful work going seven full innings while giving up just two hits and no runs. Smith poured in one of his best career outings with 12 strikeouts and now walks to speak of.
The Mustangs now raise their record to 1-3 and start out conference play with a 1-0 record. They will now travel to Oskaloosa Friday night for a double header match up beginning at 5:30 p.m.
