On Saturday, Jan. 6, the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustang wrestling team traveled to Van Horne for Benton Community High School’s Bobcat Jerry Eckenrod Invitational. The Mustangs finished seventh out of 16 teams with 124 points.

Zane Mulder led the Mustangs at the invite after finishing in first place in the 160 pound weight class. Mulder remains undefeated this season.

Mulder began with a bye, but took on Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Jacob Sherzer in the quarterfinals. He won the match over Sherzer in a 24-9 technical fall. In the semifinals, Mulder wrestled Jared Voss from West Delaware. Mulder also won this match in a technical fall (17-2). For first place, Mulder wrestled Austin Hellman (Don Bosco). Mulder won his final match in a 11-1 major decision.

At 285 pounds, Jacob Comer placed third for the Mustangs. Comer also began the invite with a bye. He went on to win his quarterfinal match by fall over Michael Currington from Centerville in 1:37. Comer was put into the consolation rounds after losing his semifinal match. Comer was pinned by Keaton Zimmerman (Williamsburg) in 3:17. Comer returned to win his consolation round by fall over Benton Community’s Bryce Timmerman in just 56 seconds. He finished up the invite by pinning Nate Hempel (Assumption) in 5:06 for third place.

Luke Fistler also placed third for the Mustangs. Fistler started the invite with a bye but won his quarterfinal match. In the quarterfinals, Fistler wrestled Christian Atkinson (Benton Community) and won in a 15-3 major decision. Fistler’s only loss was in the semifinals to Joe Kelly from West Liberty. Kelly was able to beat Fistler in a 9-3 decision. In his consolation match, Fistler wrestled Dakota Boyer (Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont). The Mustang won the match by fall (5:48) to move on to the third place match. For third place, Fistler took on Jarret Orr from Independence. With a 13-4 major decision, Fistler was able to take home third place at 152 pounds.

Zach Needham was the third Mustang to place third at the invite. Needham wrestled at 182 pounds for the Mustangs and went 4-1. He started the invite by pinning Jordan Bries (West Delaware) in 5:23. Needham was then moved into the consolation bracket after losing his quarterfinal match to Assumption’s Julien Broderson by fall. Needham was able to pin Jackson Gingerich (West Liberty) in 5:25 in his first consolation match. In his second consolation match, he beat Williamsburg’s Isaac Maser in a 6-4 decision. In the third place match, Needham took on Lane Albertsen from Union. Needham took down Albertsen in a 3-2 decision.

Ayden Kovaleski, Bain Broderick and Peyton Braunschweig also placed at the tournament. Kovaleski finished in sixth in the 113 pound weight class, Broderick wrestled at 145 pounds, where he placed seventh and Braunschweig finished in eighth at 120 pounds.

The Mustangs have a triangular on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in Oskaloosa.
